Mrs. Catherine Underwood

Mrs. Catherine Underwood 92 transitioned to glory Tuesday January 12. 2016, after a short illness at home. She was born December 18, 1923 in Stewart, Alabama, the daughter of Edward and Azalee Ealy. Catherine was a woman who knew how to keep busy doing what she loved. Whether it was playing bingo, making her own clothes, or tutoring young children, she did what brought her joy and made a difference in the lives of others Mrs. Catherine Underwood married the love of her life, Willie James Underwood on October 9, 1959. From this union came the adoption of their son, Larry James Underwood. Mrs. Underwood and her husband believed every child deserved a good home. Together they devoted twenty-three years of service to foster children of all ages. Catherine was a member of the following organizations, The Buena Vista Lioness Club of Buena Vista for over thirty years, The Old Timers Club of First Ward and Buena Vista Community Center Senior Citizen Club. She was one of the founder of The Alabama Club. Catherine was a member of Bethel AME Church, Saginaw, MI, Pastor P. David Saunders. She was a member of the Bozeman Gospel Chorus of Bethel AME for over forty years and also gave her service as a Sunday School Teacher for more than thirty years. Catherine leaves to cherish her memory; her husband, Willie James Underwood; daughters, Shebby Jean Hawkins of Flint MI, Jeanette White-Underwood of Atlanta GA ; son, Larry James Underwood of Saginaw, MI; her only surviving sister, Rether McDowell; special sister-in-law, Nettie Underwood-Jones; she also leaves to cherish her memory; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including special nephew/son, Louis Aaron (Buddy). She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Azalee Ealy; six sisters: Leola Ealy, Emma Rivers, Odessa Harris, Doris Williams, Rose Jackson and Donzell Campbell. A very special thank you to her niece, Cynthia Rembert of Lansing, MI and her granddaughters, Toni Wise of Alma, MI and Cheryl Green of Flint, MI, for their faithfulness for the countless hours of love and devotion and dedication. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Bethel A. M. E. Church, 535 Cathay Street. Pastor P. David Saunders will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
