Ms. Doris Jean Harris

My loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend went to be with the Lord and Savior Friday, April 8, 2016. Age 56 years. Doris was born May 7, 1959 in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Dorothy Mae and Walter Harris, Jr. She committed her life to the Lord at an early age at Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Roosevelt Austin, Sr., now under Pastor Rodrick A. Smith. Doris was a faithful member. She sang in the Mass Choir prior to her lingering illness. Doris was a graduate of Saginaw High School Class of 1977. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1979 where she served 20 years of active duty. She was a combat veteran of the Gulf War from which she received an Honorable Discharge. Doris was a member of the American Legion Post 312. Awards & Decorations: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, The Army Commendation Medal and Army Service Ribbon. Doris greatest accomplishment was the many years she served her country. During her spare time, she loved to reminisce about the events that she experienced as a soldier. She encouraged her son to enlist, which he did, joining the Marine Corp where he served 10 years. Some of Doris’ spare time was spent reading the bible and watching movies and spending time with her grandchildren. Doris leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Mario (Amber) Williams of Grand Rapids, MI and Spencer (Stacey) Adams of Shellvillie, GA; nine adorable grandchildren, Mario, Jr., Makayla, Mariae, Malaki, Mason, Quincey, Maranda, Kymani and Camryn; four sisters, Toni (Harris) Maefield of South Bend, IN, Victoria and Linda Harris of Saginaw, MI, Tina (Harris) McKinney of Upper Darby, PA; two brothers, Curlee (Terri) Grays of Detroit, MI and Deon Harris of South Bend, IN, very special cousins, Gail and James Harmon who spent quality time with Doris in her last days and a very close friend Elizabeth Johnson that visited Doris regularly; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the nurses that cared for Doris, Carolyn Bowens and Tina Flores. Ms. Harris was preceded in death by her grandparents, Walter Harris, Sr. and Betty O’bannon-Harris, Mary and Henry Burrell, Sr. and a beloved niece, Whitney Candace Phillips. Family hour will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 721 Johnson Street with the funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Rodrick A. Smith will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
