Mrs. Lola Agnes Shelby

Lola Agnes Shelby went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 27, 2020 at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital of Michigan at the blessed age of 98 years. She was born October 13, 1922 in Romeo, Michigan to Mary Frances Steward and Lee S. Lothery, Sr. Her husband, James I. Shelby of sixty -three years preceded her in death in 2014. Lola attended Eastern Michigan University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Masters in Reading. She began her teaching career of forty-four years in the Saginaw Public School District at Potter Elementary and retired from Webber Middle School where the Media Center was named in her honor. Many former students remember and will cherish her memory, including members of Edgewood Assisted Living staff who expressed kind words about Mrs. Shelby to her sister. Lola was a long-standing member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dennis Laffoon, where she was honored and proud to receive the status of deaconess on August 20, 2016. Lola loved Bethel and attended every Sunday until she became homebound. Although Lola did not golf like her husband, she loved working crossword puzzles and reading the Bible daily. After Lola was homebound, she looked forward to receiving the weekly church bulletin and the monthly Communion Services. Lola was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter and the Top Ladies of Distinction where she was very active in both for many years. Lola’s memory will be cherished by her sister, Judy McCoy; sisters-in-law, Madge Lothery, Carelyn Lothery and Lucille Shelby; special niece, Ruth Estelle Kemper; grandchildren, Kristin Shelby, Stephanie Shelby, Chelsea Mitchell and James Michael Shelby, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Benji and Katashi Henderson; special friend, Odahlia Rance; special neighbors, Blanche Williams, Viola and John Torrence and many other loving relatives and friends. Lola was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lee, Jr., Russell, Wilbur, Geno, Chester; one sister, Gilbertha. The family of Lola Agnes Shelby appreciates all the kind words and love the Saginaw Community has expressed. May the Lord Bless you all. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 p.m., Monday, December 7, 2020 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48607. Pastor Dennis Laffoon will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48601. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
