Mrs. Alberta Louise Culpepper

Alberta Louise Culpepper went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at her residence at the age of 86 years. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee May 8, 1933 to Lucille and Houston Wells. She wedded Robert Lee Culpepper February 9, 1952 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mrs. Culpepper was a graduate of Saginaw High School, and Delta College earning an Associate of Arts degree. She was a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Social Science degree and she received a K-12 endorsement in education from Central Michigan University. Mrs. Culpepper completed Chaplaincy training through International Fellowship of Chaplains (IFOC). She trained four years at the Diocese of Saginaw Center for Ministry. She has been a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for seventy years serving as, a counselor, a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Treasurer of St. Joseph’s Isadore Club, and Catechist Cupboard supplying food for the needy. Alberta’s work history includes, RCA Service Company, Div. of RCA as general clerical, at Neighborhood Youth Corp (NYC) and Youth Action Committee, Inc., Saginaw Public Schools, as a Substitute Teacher, Nouvel Catholic High School Education Coordinator. Mrs. Culpepper's community affiliations included Saginaw Human Planning Commission, Board of Saginaw Neighborhood, Inc., Fair Housing Advisory Board, Saginaw Housing Commission, Young Women’s Christian Association and the Bridgeport Township Planning Commission where she served for 17 years. Mrs. Culpepper had a love for youth and devoted much of her career to teaching and counseling young people. She desired to navigate them onto a more successful path. She lived a life of faith both in the community and in the work place. She earned the respect of many through her services and humanitarian commitment to the empowerment of others. While battling serious medical conditions she continued to allow love to be the verb in her life. She wrote volumes of beautiful poetry, and left a legacy with her first published book to leave her love, insight and encouragement through poetic expression for the ages. Alberta leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Robert Lee, Jr. (Dianne) Culpepper, Sabrina Hughes, Kevin Karl (Mimi) Culpepper and Eric Lamont (Jeanene) Culpepper; brother-in-law, Ralph (Shirley) Culpepper, Saginaw, MI; three sisters-in-law, Clara Wells, Saginaw, Jean Culpepper, San Antonio, TX and Edna Culpepper, Lancaster, TX; grandchildren, Cheldora (Brandon) Haynes, Kamitha and Denise Culpepper, Willette (Antonio) Campbell, Lorenzo (Chalcye) Atkins, Robert L. (Jamie) Culpepper III, Breanna and Jerel King, Tambirai Mutharika, Saurudzai A., Kumbirai L., and Chengetai R. Culpepper, Javon Johnson, DeAndre Hughes and Blaine Beemon; a host of great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, and nephews; honorary daughters, Mari Ann Newbill, Jeri Darby Theresa Rodriquez, Gwen Porterfield, Laverne White and Joyce Winters; honorary son, David R. Newbill; nieces, Damarias Jackson, Linda Dawkins Woodford, Felicia Dawkins, Cynthia Dorgan, Althea Denard Debra Shelton, Leslie Davis and Rhonda Culpepper; nephews, Luther (Skippy) Berkley III, Mark Collins, Lanary Culpepper, Roland Berkley, Thomas Jackson and Ronnie Culpepper; honorary sisters, Mildred Lowe, Betty Stefanovsky Cristina Gayton, Betty Stevenson and Jean Winchester; god-daughters, Roslyn McQueen, Yvette Wofford, Karen Murphy, Teri Ann and Cherie Stevenson; god-sons, Stevie Winchester, Tony, Lance, CoDawayne and Julian Stevenson, and Atiff Donaldson; longtime family friend, Lucille (Uleslies “Little Buddy”) Surles. Alberta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert L. Culpepper; her parents, Anna (Lucille) and Houston Wells; siblings, Sarah M. Berkley, Houston James Wells; brothers-in-law, Millard, Eldridge, Richard and Ray Charles Culpepper; nephews, Mark Drake Wells, Michael Berkley and Daniel Wells; a niece, Jacqueline Berkley; sisters-in-law, Lamuriel Johnson, Bernice, Barbara Culpepper and Leora “Red Top” Culpepper. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 910 North 6th Street, Saginaw, MI 48601. Father Frank Voris, O.F.M. cap will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607 on Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
