Mrs. Betty Shakir

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, auntie, cousin and friend transitioned on Thursday December 28, 2017 at the age of 74 years. She was the daughter of the late Millie (Neuben) and Ish Sangster. Betty was born on September 26, 1943 in Saginaw, MI where she grew up and lived out her life. Everyone who knew her knew she loved her family and had a funny sense of humor. Betty knew how to make you laugh even when you were feeling down. She embodied the spirit of love, compassion and understanding. She was a nice person but didn’t tolerate any mess. Betty could be your best friend and had no problem telling you about yourself. During her early years she worked as a Nursing Assistant for St. Mary’s Hospital. She later worked as a security guard and retired as a housekeeper. Betty had a great work ethic and stayed in TCB mode. She also enjoyed cooking for her family. Betty was a laid back person and pleasant to be around. Later in her life she converted to Islam, became a member of the Islamic Center of Saginaw and on November 30, 1995 she married Hamidullah R. Shakir. She leaves to cherish her memory, her spouse of 22 years, Hamidullah R. Shakir; two sons, Thomas (LaTaschia) Collins and Eric Collins; grandchildren, Tanesha (Anthony) Smith, Ashley Collins, Alexis Collins, Monee Davis, Amari Henley, Eric Scott, BreO’nca Scott, Marceleius Collins, TreVonn Collins, and Jeremiah Collins; great-grandchildren, Jaylin, Dalaylah, Jazmine, Dale, Janiyah, Amiyah, Saniyah, Zaida, Amani, Madison and LaTavion; two brothers, Ish and Ollie Sangster; a host of nieces and nephews, including, Cecelia Lynn Whitlow, Phyllis (Tim) Ferguson, Renea Joy Carter, Leo (Ruby) Carter, Monica Sangster-Henley, Marcus Sangster, Valli Sangster, Tracey (Carmen) Boswell, Connie Sangster, Virgil Andre Sangster, Louise Sangster; a host of friends including special friends, Denise Culpepper-Thompson, E’Mariea and Zy’lre Scott, Janice Garth and Ann Boatman; a host of cousins and other relatives. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Shelly L. Sangster; great-grandchildren, A’Mya Henley and Amari Jr.; great-nephew, Demetrice Ferguson, parents, Millie and Ish Sangster; sister, Percy T. Davis; brother, Freddie Sangster. Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, 1114 North 6th Street, Saginaw, MI. Dr. Marvin T. Smith will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607 on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. The family will be present from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
