Mr. Charles McMillan Jr.

Charlie McMillan, Jr. was born February 16, 1925 in Westfield, AL to Letha (Johnson) and Charles McMillan, Sr. He passed away October 1, 2017 at 92 years of age. He attended Robinson Elementary and Fairfield Industrial Junior and Senior High School, where he was a reputable football player, but by his own admission, only a fair basketball player. Charlie served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later was a Pullman porter transporting soldiers across the country. These two jobs afforded him much travel. He became known as Charles after moving to Saginaw in 1949. He worked for General Motors Grey Iron Foundry and retired after 40 years of service. He stayed actively involved in the Saginaw Community as a Cub Scout leader, PTA member, Auxiliary Police Officer, Habitat Humanity of Saginaw and NAACP member. He was committed to voting because he had been denied that right in the South. He worked during election campaigns and was proud to witness Barack Obama become the first Black President of the United States. He continues to give to the community and honor his late wife through the Lee Essie and Charles McMillan Scholarship established by the Saginaw Community Foundation. As a faithful member of Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church for over 65 years, he served as Trustee, Layman, on the Kitchen ministry and as an usher instructor. Charles married Lee Essie Smith in 1943 and that union produced eight children to carry on his legacy: Rosie McMillan, Delores Lewis, Valerie (Sam) Gatson, Barbara McMillan-Hargrow, , Charles (Lorane) McMillan, Charlotte (Frank) Harper, Carl (Yvonne) McMillan all of Saginaw, MI and Michael (Heather) Grace of Custer, SD; sister-in-law Rosemary (Douglas) Liddell, Saginaw, MI; 31 grandchildren, Hanneke, Marjet (Alfonza), Richard (Ryan), Candace, Sean, Charles (Tonie), Damion (Christy), Catrena, Katrina, Aaron, Tamara (Patrick), Terrance (Shernita), Shontee, Chaka, Amanda, Vanessa (Greg), Terry, Xavier, Nicole, Jerrard, Joshua, Andreus (Kanshelle), LeeVon, LaKesha (Joe), Jocelyn (Richard), Norma, Patrice, Micah, Micaiah, Mikael, and Mical; 42 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Mr. McMillan was preceded in death by his wife, of 57 years, Lee Essie McMillan; daughter, Carol L. Carter; grandson, Brian McMillan Mannie and great-grandson, DeMario Reed; parents, Letha (Johnson) and Charlie McMillan, Sr.; step-mother, Jerri Lee (Youngblood) McMillan; brother, Jerry McMillan; sister, Minnie L. Hammond; brother, James Davis, sister-in-law, Ophelia Davis and brother-in-law, Henry Smith. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 9, 2017 at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church 1114 N. 6th Street, Saginaw, MI. Dr. Marvin T. Smith will officiate with entombment at Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum, 5950 Gratiot Road Saginaw, Michigan 48638. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607 on Sunday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
