Mr. Clarence Newton, Jr.

Clarence Newton, Jr. was born August 31, 1941 to the proud parents of Clarence, Sr. and Othella (Carter) Newton in Downsville, Louisiana. He passed away on April 26, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Clarence received his early education in Farmersville, LA and was a graduate of Eastside High in 1960. He attended Southern University Baton Rouge earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Mr. Newton earned his Master’s Degree with a Specialist in Education at Central Michigan University. Clarence married Weater Fay Johnson in Covington, Louisiana in 1966, she preceded him in death. He came to Saginaw, Michigan in 1968 and gained employment teaching, and working as the Athletic Director at Buena Vista High School. After rising through the ranks, he earned the position of Assistant Principal at the High School, and became the Principle at Ricker Middle School in the Buena Vista School District. He had a passion for his students. He inspired them to further their education no matter the situation. He would lend assistance helping them with their student aide as well as whatever was needed. He inspired friends in the South that were teachers to come to Saginaw to obtain jobs. He was a proud member of Chi Xi Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Mr. Newton leaves to cherish his memory his son, Lawrence Newton, Saginaw, MI; two grandchildren, Miles Newton and Laila Newton both of Canton, MI; four foster children, Rosalyn Williams-Griffin, Lansing, MI, Artilla Mae Walker, Saginaw, MI, Teliferro Mitchell, Dumfries, VA and Tyran Houston, Orlando, FL; sisters, Bertha Garrett, Houston, TX, Retha Ridgell, Farmerville, LA and Mabel Collins, Houston, TX; brothers, Charles Shamleia) Newton, San Antonio, TX, Dave (Patricia Pleasant) Newton and William (Shirley) Newton, both of Saginaw, MI and Bobby Newton, Steve Bell, and John Holley all of Farmerville, LA and John L. Holley; sisters-in-law, Gladys Jamison, Mississippi, China Coleman and Joyce Johnson, both of Louisiana; brother-in-law, Lonnie Johnson of Louisiana; nieces, Marilyn, Lydia and Devona Williams, all of Houston, TX, and Marlana Alexander of Atlanta; nephews, Michael Newton, Clayton Williams, Jr. and Jeffery Williams all of Houston, TX,; cousin, Evelyn Carter, Saginaw, many other relatives and friends including special friends, Leon Clark, and Kirk Floyd both of Saginaw, Mitchell Watley, Cleveland, OH Robert Gutery McGhee, Los Angeles, CA, Jimmie Logan, Patricia Scott, George Morris, George Charles of Little Rock, AR, Marion Prudhomme, Monroe, LA and Tony OdNeal. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clarence, Sr. and Othella Newton; stepmother, Lillie Bell Newton; grandparents,Lonnie and Bertha Carter; mother and father-in-law, Ollie and Luella Johnson; uncle, Tommy McNeal; cousin, Betty Carter and special friend, Richard Crosby. The family would like to express special thanks to Debbie Jackson, Saginaw and Rachel Martinez and the staff at Ray EnAfc Home. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. Pastor Charles Dallas will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
