Rev. Clovis McKenzie Screws Sr.

Clovis Screws was born in Cottonton, Alabama to Ferdinand and Leona (Williams) Screws on September 2, 1936. He passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the age of 83 years. He was the youngest of 13 children, having eight brothers and four sisters. He came to Detroit, Michigan in 1965 where he married a very lovely woman, Rosetta (Upshaw) Screws in 1958. They celebrated 61 years of marriage, having two sons, Dr. Clovis, Jr. (Jennifer) Screws, West Bloomfield, MI and Rev. Gregory (Monique) Screws, Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Ms. Brenda Denise Screws, West Chester, OH. While in Detroit, he received his certification as an Electronics Technician from the Radio Electronic Television School in 1963. Rev. Screws relocated to Saginaw, Michigan in 1964 and was hired at the Metal Casting Plant, General Motors Corp. and was a member of U.A.W. Local 668. He joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church on Mother’s Day of 1964 (we were still in the basement). He was ordained for Deacon in 1966, preached his trial sermon under the pastorship of Rev. Roosevelt Mosley on the 25th Day of January, 1970, and was ordained as an associate Minister of St. Paul Baptist Church on April 8, 1973. He has studied under Dr. J.P. Wilson, completed studies with Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL, courses of study in Theology and Christian Training at the American Baptist Theological Seminary from 1989-1991. He received his Bachelor’s of Religious Studies from the Urban Bible Institute. At St. Paul he was one of the organizers of Vacation Bible School where for 12 years served as the instructor of the teachers. He was an excellent teacher in the Mission Department. In the fall of 1989 Rev. Mosley became ill, the church was blessed that Rev. Screws served as Interim Pastor until the newly elected pastor was placed. Rev. Screws served as the Adult (New Members) New Believers Class and in other areas at the church. Rev. Clovis McKenzie Screws was dedicated to God and his family. He and his wife instilled family values in their children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being a part of the “Traveling Eight”, they traveled all across the country from east to west, even Hawaii. He loved traveling with his children and grandchildren, enjoyed gospel music, hymns, listening to jazz, taping (100’s of VHS tapes) and watching old Western Movies. Rev. Screws leaves to cherish many precious memories, his loving, devoted wife, Rosetta Screws; three children, Clovis, Jr., Gregory and Brenda; grandchildren, Elisia J. Screws, West Chester, OH, Dr. Ashley L. Screws, Grand Rapids, MI, Gregory Screws II, Cincinnati, OH, Mallory Screws, Baltimore, MD and Kenneth Rogers III, West Bloomfield, MI; godchildren, LaRita Banks, Detroit, MI, Torrey Moten, Grand Rapids, MI and Bryant Epperson, Saginaw, MI; one loving brother, Norman Screws, Louisville, KY, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand Sr. and Leona Screws; siblings, Clifford, Robert, Sr., Ulyses, Clarence, Hattie, Ferdinand, Eddie C., Virginia, Timothy, Helton and Theodore and a god-son, Allen, Luke. Family hour will take place 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at St. Paul Missionary Baptist, 120 N. 15th Street, Saginaw, MI 48601 with the funeral service commencing at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Vincent McMillon will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607 on Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
