Mrs. Dorris Jean Brooks

Dorris J. Porter Horton Brooks was born July 25, 1947 in Tchula, Mississippi to LC Horton and Lillian Booker. She passed away February 13, 2018 at the age of 70 years. She was raised by her grandparents, the late Henry and Betty Porter. Dorris attended Tchula Attendance Center High School. She received an Associate Degree in Business from Saginaw Business Institute. Dorris retired from the Blue Care Network and served as Union Steward for more than 25 years. Spending time with her family was her number one passion. She was a fantastic cook and hostess spending days preparing for family gatherings. Her food left you craving more. She was a very active member at New Mount Calvary Baptist Church for many years and was involved in The Sisterhood Ministry. She later united with Messiah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Otis Washington where she served faithfully as co-chair of the Trustee Ministry and Treasurer of the Mission Outreach Ministry. Mrs. Brooks leaves to cherish many memories, her loving and devoted, husband of more than 50 years, Allen Brooks; two sons, James A. (Darcy) Brooks, Davenport, IA and Aquavis Brooks, Oakland, CA; one daughter, Sharon (Bobby) Martin, Saginaw, MI; 10 grandchildren, Sharda, James, Jr., Samone (Deontae), Jerome, Perez. Jasmine, Mykel, Jada, Lil Bobby and Zalyn; four great-grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Ruby Baker, Isola, MS; three special first cousins, Yvonne, Glenda Aaliyah and Turner (Flora) Fife; thirteen in-laws, Velma (Mozell), Clyde (Brenda), Sarah, Robert (Helen), Cleatre (Thelma), Leslie, Mack (Yolanda), Terry (Doris), Melvin (Ann), Angela, Chris (Rose), Ollie Mae and Barbara Jean; a host of family and friends, including close friends, Vera Parks, Mary McCray, Sarah Green, Ann and Willie Matthews, Michell (Greg) Fifer, Toni Brooks and Dorothy Harris. Dorris was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Booker and LC Horton; son, Michael Brooks; uncles, Willie and David Porter; aunt, Dora Acoff and a sister-in-law, Helen Cummings. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church, 2615 Williamson Rd. Pastor Otis Washington will officiate with interment in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum, 7475 Holland Rd. Friends may call at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave. on Wednesday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. the family will be present from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.
