Mrs. Fannie Mae Smith

Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Fannie Mae Smith, affectionately known as “NaNa”. Born on October 7, 1950 in Frenchman Bayou, Arkansas to Claude T. and Elizabeth Smith. Fannie was one of 16 children. Her journey through life was as vibrant and full as the beautiful state of Michigan where she made her home. Fannie, known as “NaNa” was known for her forthright and genuine nature. She traveled abroad, experienced different cultures, and eventually settled in Michigan where she worked as a packer for many years at Vlasic Pickle Company. “NaNa” was a “keeping it real” type of person, always speaking her mind with a no-nonsense attitude that endeared her to everyone she met. “NaNa” had heart full of love and a spirit of generosity. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, supporting and uplifting those around her. She was authentically herself, with a unique charm that would draw people in. Her love for dancing, listening to the blues cooking and especially watching Tarzan brought joy to her and everyone around her. One of NaNa’s most endearing qualities was her habit of purchasing walking shoes for every child born of her lineage. This simple act of love and care exemplified her commitment to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her five children, Joyce Barnes, Wanneka (Marcus) Fair, Willie James Barnes, Jr., Charles Edward Barnes and Jumaela Johnson; 11 grandchildren, Clarissa, Elizabeth, Willie Lee (Danielle), Deonsha (Cortez), Denitra, Keyahni, Angel, Ashley and Nevaeh; she also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Leaira, Marcus, Anthony, Shatez, Tyreiona, Darrell, Tyleeah, Jesse, Lauryn, Jayceon, Cortney, Kameron, Dreux, Jenesis and Harley all of Saginaw, MI; sisters, Tearetha Taylor, Chicago, IL, Shirley Lee Smith and Mary Applewhite, Milwaukee, WI; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends will continue to honor her memory. Ms. Fannie Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Claudia T and Elizabeth Smith; sisters, Mary Smith, Dollie Ann fowler, Rosa Lee Smith, Estella Davis, Evelyn Ford Massey, Olivia Gates, Dorothy Smith and Joystine Golden; brothers, James Smith, Phil Ford and Aaron Applewhite; nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends including special friends, Loretta Hendricks, Sharon Staves and Linda Coleman. As we remember Fannie, let us celebrate her life with the joy she brought to ours. Her legacy of love and support will forever be a guiding light for her family and friends. Rest in peace, “NaNa”, and thank you for the love and memories that will forever live in our hearts. We Love You. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. Pastor Michael G. Hayes, Sr. will officiate. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
