Geraldine Hazel Scott

Mrs. Geraldine Hazel Woods-Scott, affectionately known as “Gerry,” age 94 of Saginaw, MI, fought the good fight and went on to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, January 16, 2015, at home with family by her side. She was born May 10, 1920 in Tazewell County, Virginia to the late Clarence L. and Mable Alexander Woods. She was united in marriage with William L. “Scotty” Scott, Sr. on June 3, 1941 in Bristol, TN, and to their union, two sons were born. Gerry enjoyed life and living. An infectious people person, Gerry was an avid cruiser with a wanderlust spirit. She livened every opportunity and made the most of her time, whether crocheting, making outfits, especially for her children and grandchildren, line dancing, playing board games and bingo, taking trips to the casino, or indulging in chocolate. She attended Bluefield Teacher’s College and received her degree in social work from Delta College. She also received a Ph.D. in Cosmetology. With her entrepreneurial skill, Gerry owned her own beauty salon where she worked as a licensed cosmetologist for many years. Gerry was also employed by the Saginaw Multi-Purpose Center as a social worker, and the Ashwald Girls’ Home in Frankenmuth. There was never a dull moment with Gerry who was active on the Saginaw Economic Development Committee Board (SEDC), Buena Vista Retirees, Bethel AME Retirees Club, Buena Vista Senior Quilting Club, the Girl Scout Council, various bowling leagues, and the Ricker Sewing Circle. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Pastor William (Vivian) Scott, Jr. and Robert L. Scott; grandchildren, Gerri (Min. Jeffery) Bowen, Ethelind Scott, Robert Scott, Tobin (Myra) Williams, Tracey (Greg) McKinney and Monique Hightower; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Roderick, Jessica, Jeff Jr., William, Robert Jr. and Alexandria; two great-great-grandchildren, Cameron and Josiah; one brother, Jerry Walker Woods; one sister, Clarice Basdeo; sisters-in-law, Roberta Johnson, Pearl Heilig, Bernice & Patricia Scott; one aunt, Eva Woods of San Bernardino, California; special cousins, Jerry (Crystal) and Maggie Woods; special daughters, Mary Scott-McDonald and Annie Robinson; goddaughter, Roslynn Owens-Williams; the Ninth Street Community Church where she was a faithful member and choir member; a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends, including, Mr. & Mrs. Henry and Margaret Brown, Houston and Elaine Jackson, Jr., Mr. Mark Thomas, Sr., and Pedro Gonzales. Mrs. Scott was predeceased by her husband, William L. Scott, Sr.; one brother, Clarence Jr.; and seven sisters, Melida, Glenna Mae, Leola, Margaret, Valena, Rita, and Lavonne. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, 1114 North 6th Street, Dr. Marvin T. Smith, pastor. Pastor William Scott, Jr. will officiate with interment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.
