Mrs. Helen R. Hughey

Mrs. Helen Rogerlee Hughey, age 88, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Covenant Medical Center. She was born June 15, 1927 in Waco, GA, to the late Lovett and Annie Mae Foster. Helen was married to the late Aurscant Hughey, Sr. Mrs. Hughey graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, Dayton, OH. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree from Saginaw Valley State University and began her teaching career in the Saginaw Public School District. Helen also worked at Dow Corning, Midland, MI, the State of Michigan Department of Social Services and Legal Aid Services. She retired from the Saginaw Public School District in 1989. Mrs. Hughey loved writing scripts; she was an avid reader and an excellent seamstress. Affectionately known as “the Mother of First Ward Community Center,” Mrs. Hughey loved to tell the story about how she was the first child to set foot in the center when the doors first opened in the late 1930’s. For many years, she was an active volunteer in the community and a member of First Ward Community Center Senior Citizens Club, Old Timers Club, Grandparents Support Group, Friends of Claytor Library and the Saginaw County CAC Board of Directors. Helen was a former Member of Phi Delta Kappa National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Gamma Kappa Chapter and a member of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Helen Hughey is survived by her daughter, Dawn Ann Hughey; three sons, Aurscant Hughey-Bey, LaVann and James Hughey, all of Saginaw; eight grandchildren, DaWaun and Shawnae Hughey, Jameshia L. Dorsey, Aurscanta, Demetrick, Tremaine, DeAndre and Juma Mounger; great-grandson whom she adore, Tyjuan T. Hughey of Dallas, TX; sister, Jackie (Leonard) Porterfield; goddaughter, Sheilda D. Braddock of Saginaw; niece, Patricia (Ricky) Todd of Muskegon, MI; sister in-law, Gentry Hughey of Muskegon Heights; cousin, Eligh Arnold of Saginaw; as well as her extended family, Alisa Griffith and children, Da’Rell, Tre’Von, Shavonna and Teonna, Dayton, OH and Douglasville, GA family; Arthurene Banks, Inez Brown, Willette Daniels and Ursula Edwards, who were like sisters to her; also, her close friend, The Honorable Faye Harrison, other relatives and friends too numerous to list but not forgotten. Mrs. Hughey was preceded in death by her husband, Aurscant Hughey, Sr.; daughter, Dawnae Estelle Hughey; stepdaughter, Jackie Mounger; cousin, Marjorie Richardson; close friends, Sarah Berkley and Charles E. Braddock. The family extends special thanks to aunt Jackie and uncle Leonard Porterfield, Sheilda D. Braddock, personal nurse, Pansy Murray, Steve Johnson, Glenda Cross, Rev. Roosevelt Austin, Pastor Joyce Redfearn, Pastor Shelia M. Washington, Pastor Larry D. Camel and New Birth Baptist Church family and Pastor Hurley Coleman Jr. and World Outreach Campus family. Family hour will take place 10 a.m. Monday, December 7, 2015 at the New Birth Baptist Church, 3121 Sheridan Ave, with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Larry Camel will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Sunday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
