Horace Davis

Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009 at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, 1114 N. 6th Street. Dr. Marvin T. Smith will officiate. Mr. Davis will lie in state at Browne's Mortuary, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Davis went home to be with the Lord on August 13, 2009 at the age of 87 years. He was born June 5, 1922 in Hollandale, MS to the late Tim and Lela (Martin) Davis. His family moved to Memphis, TN when he was young and there he spent his childhood. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in Germany, France, Ireland and England. Mr. Davis moved to Saginaw in 1947 and began working at the Chevrolet Grey Iron Foundry. He married Marie Poindexter in 1957. She preceded him in death in 1998. Mr. Davis worked for 36 years at the Bay City Country Club, with 26 years as General Manager. He retired from there in 1992. He was a long time member of the Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church where he served on several committees, including the By-Laws Committee and was the Chairman of the Finance Committee until the time of his death. Surviving are one daughter, Zina Beth Davis; grandson, Traveon Davis of Saginaw; nieces, Alma Beatty and Lavayra Frazier; nephew, Kevin Beatty, all of Saginaw, MI; great-nieces and nephews, including Vernon and April Langston of Flower Mound, TX, Sherwin and Mona Beatty of Cincinnati, OH and James and Donisha Maxey of Saginaw, MI; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. His memory will be shared by a special friend, Ora Browne, and many other friends, including Ephraim Carter, Pell Malone, E. Frankie Casel, Clyde and Pearl Robinson, Roosevelt Jones, Willie Butler and Nancy Spencer-Jones; Godsons, Judge Terry Clark and Harvey Nickleberry; and those he considered his sons and daughters, Wilmer McZee, Al Holiday and Dr. Bobby Ann Robinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Ruby Scott and special friend, J.D. Smith. Horace Davis was an avid golfer. He was a devout Christian. He served his country in a time of war. He loved and cherished his family, extended family, church family and his many friends. He was an inspiration to many. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The family wishes to thank Dr. Singh, Dr. Hughes and the staff of Covenant-Cooper and Covenant-Harrison.
