Rev. James P. Scott, Sr.

James P. Scott, Sr. (affectionately known to his family as "King James"), age 96, of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025. He was born on October 5, 1928, in Boligee, Alabama, to the late Emma Rogers and Spencer Hamilton. James was a dedicated family man, a faithful servant, and an accomplished member of his community. In 1946, James met the love of his life, Rosie Mae Simpson. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1952 and quickly started their family together. To this union was born five daughters and four sons. James was a loving husband and committed father, who worked hard to provide for his family. Even though he worked long hours, he still found time to make countless memories with his family by taking them on family drives, visits to the park and doing something special with them nearly every Friday. James worked tirelessly throughout his life, spending over 40 years with General Motors before retiring in 1988. His work ethic was unparalleled, and at one point, he managed three jobs, including positions at Pioneer Sugar and as a night security guard at Colette’s Grocery Store. His commitment to hard work and service was the cornerstone of his life, reflecting the strength and resilience he passed down to his children and loved ones. A proud and active member of his community, James was a 33rd-degree Mason with the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons of King James Lodge #109 in Saginaw for over 60 years. His devotion to his faith and ministry was equally profound. James began his spiritual journey as a deacon and was called to ministry in 1975 after delivering his Trial Sermon at St. Paul Baptist Church. Over the next 40 years, he served as a minister, sharing his wisdom and love for God with all who knew him. His kindness and dedication extended beyond the pulpit as he also drove the church bus for Sunday School, ensuring that others could worship and learn. James had a great passion for sports, particularly baseball and bowling. He was an exceptional bowler, receiving many accolades throughout his life, including a highlight in the Saginaw News for a perfect 300 game in his early 80’s. James continued to bowl until the age of 94. His love for sports also extended to blooper ball, a hobby he mastered with enthusiasm. He was once considered for professional baseball, a testament to his athleticism and dedication to the game. James was a devoted father and grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and service. He is survived by his children, James G. Scott, Jr., Spencer (Lisa) Scott, Dr. Wanda Lewis, Emma Hargrove, Ronnie (Donetta) Scott, Janice (Jerome) Wilson, and Lesia Kight. He was also the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition, James leaves behind his son-in-law, Dan Essex; godson, Patrick Carter; nephew, Patrick Scott; niece, Dorothy Richardson; sister-in-law, Clotea Thomas; cousin, Kareemah Amir; close family friend, Irene Conner and his special friend, Gladys Vick. Rev. James P. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Rosie Mae Scott; son, Derrick and devoted daughter, Eva; siblings, Roosevelt, Christine, Lorenzo, Lewis, Willie, Jack, Jessie Lee and Sid; sons-in- law, Kenny, Calvin and Rodney; daughter- in-law, Charlene; and two nieces, Willie Mae and Gladys. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. His legacy of faith, work ethic, and love for his family and community will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, February 8, 2025, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 120 N. 15th St., Saginaw, MI 48601, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Dr. Vincent McMillon officiating.
