James Shelby

James Isaac Shelby passed away, March 26, 2014, at St. Mary’s of Michigan Hospital at the age of 92. He was born on March 31, 1921 to Verda Belle McClure and Robert M. Shelby. His wife, Lola A., survives him. James was preceded in death by his son, James Michael Shelby, Sr. and by his siblings, Howard V., John E., Don W., Robert C. Shelby, Ruth M. Hurd, and Ethel E. Kemper. James attended school and graduated from Paola Kansas Public Schools. He moved to Saginaw, Michigan in 1941 and over the years was employed by the Saginaw Malleable Plant, the U.S. Postal Service, Model City Development Corp., Director of First Ward Community Center and later retired from Shelby Insurance Agency. James will be sadly missed by his daughter-in-law, Darnella G. Shelby; sisters-in-law, Lucille Shelby, Judith McCoy and Madge Lothery; brothers-in-law, Wilbur (Carolyn) Lothery and Russell Lothery; his grandchildren, Kristen and Stephanie Shelby, Chelsea Mitchell, James Michael, Jr., and Christian Shelby; great-grandchildren, Benji and Katashi Henderson; nieces and nephews, Ruth Kemper, Martha (Vernell) Ramsey, John H. (Regina), and Dr. Robert Kemper, Brandi Shelby Wells, James Hurd, Jr., Linda Hurd Burnett, Ronald Pompey, Patricia (Eric) Lewis, Don (Bonita) and Timothy (Julie) Shelby, and Kim(Paige) Smith; Godsons, Ronald Rance and Keith Poston. James was a faithful member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church for over seventy years and worked dutifully as a trustee, Courtesy Committee member, Day Care Board member and Tuesday Night Bible Study attendee. James really enjoyed weekends of golf with his friends, Thelma Poston, Delores Wilson, the late Carl Poston, Beale Rance, and Ruben Adams. May Our Loved One Rest in Peace Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 535 Cathay Street. Pastor P. David Saunders will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., on Monday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present at 6:00 p.m. for a family hour.
