Mrs. Janet McCurdy Miller

Janet Louise McCurdy was born to Sylvia “Betty” Bates McCurdy and Joe B. McCurdy Sr. on March 29, 1945 in Saginaw, Michigan. Janet passed away on December 5, 2024. She was the only child born to their union. After graduating from Saginaw High School, Janet attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. She later was employed at Eaton Corporation. Janet married Otis J. Miller Sr. on June 30, 1974. The couple owned Moon & Son Grocery and rental properties throughout the city. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1988. Janet continued to operate the grocery after Otis’ passing, with the help of her parents and other family members. Janet grew up as an active member in Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church where she enjoyed its youth programs and spiritual fellowship. In her later years, she rejoined the church. She spent years studying piano and had a small organ on “prominent display” in her living room. Janet had a winning smile - like her mom - and loved spending time with her large family and friends traveling and also usually was up for a road trip to her favorite casino. Janet is survived by sons, Derek (Deirdre) McCurdy of Chula Vista, Calif. and Darnell (Vanessa) McCurdy Sr. of Memphis, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kanada Reed, DeMarkius Erwin, Andrea (Jason) Petty, Darnell (Deidra) McCurdy, Jr., Amber (Otis) Mason, Veronica Rodriquez, Shantrail Wilkins, Tashara Hunter, Cierra Farmer, Finesse (Philip) Kevil, Aramis and Kires Davis; many great-grandchildren including twins who she took great pleasure in spending time with, Marrion and Skye. Also surviving are cousins, Joyce Williams, Jacqueline Bates, Jeraldine Burnell, Julia (Tonza, Sr.) Price, Jeanetta, Jennifer and John Bates, Brenda (Bruce) Nolen, Alice Thomas, Roland (Deidre) Thomas, Jr., James E. Thomas Sr., Sheena (Culley) Thomas, the Rev. Frederick S. Thomas, a special cousin, Ellen (Browder) Simon and the Browder Family; nieces and nephews, Patria (Tom) Dye, Terrance (Regina) McCurdy, Portia (Steven) Sumner, Kalila Najwa Rafa, Tori Jo (Steven) Teague, Joe McCurdy III and Ameerah McCurdy. Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Otis J. Miller Sr.; parents, Sylvia and Joe B. McCurdy Sr.; brothers and a sister-in-law, Joe B. McCurdy Jr. and James (Frankie) McCurdy; granddaughter, Margaret Amos; niece, Atarah (McCurdy) Robinson; step-children, Otis J. Miller Jr. and Sheila Miller; maternal grandparents, Robert and Ovella (Miller) Bates; paternal grandparents, Joe McCurdy and Lorena (Echols) McCurdy McCormick; aunts, Louise McCurdy, Emma Bates, Lorraine Bates, Mary Jones and Dorothy Thomas; uncles, Edward McCurdy, Robert E. Bates Sr., James M. Bates Sr., the Rev. Frederick Jones and Roland Thomas Sr. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist, 2115 Wadsworth Ave. Saginaw, MI 48601. Pastor Kee'Laun Crum will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service
