Mr. Jim Thomas "Champ" Stewart, Sr.

Mr. Jim Thomas Stewart, Sr. (Champ) transitioned from his earthly home on Saturday April 11, 2020 at the age of 88 years. Jim aka “Champ” was born on October 11, 1931 in Thompson, AL to the late Mary Stewart and Demus “N.D.” Pickett. He was later raised by Ellen Pickett who he called Mom. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Ernest Reed. Mr. Stewart served on many auxiliaries until his health failed him. Champ loved to drive but when you saw him, he was always doing 90-95 mph in a 25 mph zone. He loved to brew homemade wine, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening and he had the best garden on the block. Jim married Matilda Harris and to this union seven children was born. He later married Vickie Barkley. Mr. Jim Stewart leaves to treasure his memory, three daughters, Mary Bennett of Shreveport, LA, Carolyn (Cornell) Wicker and Barbara (David) McGhee of Murfreesboro, TN; four sons, C.W. (Eunice) Harris, Jim Stewart, Jr., Elbert Stewart of Murfreesboro, TN and Leslie Barkley of Saginaw, MI; sister-in-law, Marcia (Ben) Williams; mother-in-law, Lucille Surles; 35 grandchildren; a host of great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and special cousin, Lizzie Pickett; special niece, Regina Wingate; close friends, Lazree Williams, Al Napier and Cleveland Williams. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Stewart and Demus “N.D.” Pickett; wife, Vickie Stewart; daughter, Shirley Garrett; brother, Woodrow Pickett; sisters, Addie Lee Crockett and Mary Carter.
