Mr. John L. Hinton

Mr. John Louis Hinton peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. John was born on February 5, 1939, from the holy union of Eddie and Johnnie Mae Hinton in Columbus, Georgia. His parents moved to Saginaw, Michigan when John was only two years old. Both parents preceded him in death. John was educated in the Saginaw Public School System and earned his diploma from Saginaw High School in 1957, where he also played running back on the Varsity Football Team. He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Jean (Atwater) Hinton on October 10, 1959. Together, they raised two daughters, Carla Denise Hinton, and Rhonda Michelle (Hinton) Mathis. Also, John and Doris were a major influence in raising their grandkids and a special niece, Beatrice Erwin King. John was a lifelong member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church since the age of two. John started his career at A&P Grocery Store where he worked as butcher, and after several years he started his own store, Sureway Party Store, Inc., with Moses Benson and Thomas Humes. John then started a career with Sysco Food Service and retired after 26 years of dedicated service. Post retirement, John’s love for meat cultivating still lured in his spirit, he went back to work, part-time as a Senior Butcher for Sam’s Club of Saginaw, MI for seven years. In his spare time, John enjoyed watching football and basketball, notably his favorite sport teams were the Detroit Lions and Michigan State University Football and Basketball teams. John use to participate in the “Thursday Morning Senior League” at LeFevre’s Bowling Alley with his late brothers-in-law, Joseph and Charles Atwater. John Louis Hinton leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Carla D. Hinton; six grandsons, Jonathan J. Hinton of Saginaw, MI, Jerry A. (E’Vanda) Mathis, Jr. of Battle Creek, MI, Gary W. Thomas of Saginaw, MI, Saleem (Quentrese) Hinton of Dardenne Prairie, MO, Wayne S. Thomas of Saginaw, MI and Deyonis (Naseralyn) Hinton of Wentzville, MO; one granddaughter, Rhonda Rivera of Saginaw, MI; 14 beautiful great-grandchildren that he loved dearly, Jon’Nai Hinton, Jayden Mathis, Ja’Keyla Mathis, Ja’Nylah Mathis, Gary W. Thomas, Jr., Ge’Sean Thomas, My’Angel Rivera, Arsenio Dukes, Jr., and Do’Rhonda Dukes all of Saginaw, MI. Jakai Mathis of Battle Creek, MI, Saleem H. Hinton Jr. of Dardenne Prairie, MO, Deyonis Hinton II and Jonas L. Hinton of Wentzville, MO; one godson, Kielen (Sarah) J. King of Vancouver, WA; one goddaughter, Ashley Anderson of Saginaw, MI; two brothers, Ralph (Ruthie) Hinton of Saginaw, MI, and Al (Sei) Hinton of Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Hinton was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 62 years, Doris Jean (Atwater) Hinton; his daughter, Rhonda (Hinton) Mathis; parents, Eddie and Johnnie Mae Hinton; father and mother-in-law, Jeffrey and Leora Atwater; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Atwater) Doster and Mattie (Atwater) Erwin; three brothers-in-law, Willie B. Hutch, Joseph W. Atwater and Charles W. Atwater; one godson, Craig Henley and one goddaughter, Khailia Warren. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 25, 2023 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 535 Cathay Street, Saginaw, MI, 48601. Rev. Dr. Dennis Laffoon will officiate. Interment will take place Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607 on Sunday, from 2:00-6:00 p.m.
