Mrs. Leodia Marzetta "Mott" Powell

Formerly of Saginaw, Michigan . Beloved mother, grandmother “Nanna” and sister passed away suddenly Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 391 Morgans Creek Ct. NW in Kennesaw, Georgia at the age of 87 years.. She was born to Johnie and Beatrice Smith on September 11, 1936 in Decatur, Mississippi. Leodia was baptized at Midway Baptist Church in Decatur, MS, and after moving to Meridian, MS she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church. After graduation she moved to Saginaw, Michigan where Leodia met her loving husband, Lloyd Powell and they were married for 52 years. She was employed with the Saginaw School System as a teacher for 24 years retiring in 1998. After relocating to Saginaw, MI she joined Shiloh Baptist Church. She later became a member of Christ Community Church (now New Christ Community Church) with her husband. She was active in Sunday School, the Mission Dept., Senior Choir and served on the Trustee Board. Then later she and her husband became faithful members of Truevine Missionary Baptist Church where she served as president of the Board of Christian Education, a member of the Senior Choir, the Mission Dept., attended Sunday School and was active in the Saginaw Valley Baptist District Association. She enjoyed singing, photography, being a Certified Wedding Consultant and spending time with family and friends. She mentored several of her prior students who later chose the path of being an educator. She was a longtime member of Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She served as Basileus and Rhor Advisor in her chapter. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Eta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. She and her husband relocated to Georgia in 2008 to be closer to their children. Leodia then joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia. Leodia is survived by her children, Stefan Powell, Atlanta, GA, Stephanie Powell-Evans, Kennesaw, GA and Sheldon (Faye) Powell, Nashville, TN; stepdaughter, Jackie Stewart, Little Rock, AR; grandchildren, Jazyme Powell, Sydnee and Delayna Evans, Maya Powell and Durell Carney; one brother, Clois (Idella) Smith, Toledo, OH; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Leodia “Mott” Powell was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lloyd Powell; parents, Johnie and Beatrice Smith; sisters, Hazel Woodhouse, Velma Bell and Thelma Nichols; brothers, Johnie D. Smith, Dr. Rev. Henry Smith and two infant brothers. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Truevine Missionary Baptist Church, 2930 Janes St., Saginaw, MI 48601. Pastor Paul E. Broaddus will officiate with interment in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens 7474 Holland Ave. Visitation will take place on Thursday at the funeral home from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. The Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated will conduct A Remembrance Service at 5:00 p.m.
