Mrs. Mary Helen Underwood

In God’s plans, there are many things man cannot understand, but we must trust His judgement and be guided by His hand. On the peaceful morning of Friday, June 1, 2018, the Lord opened His loving arms and welcomed His child Mary Helen home to eternal rest at the age of 85 years. Mary Helen was the oldest of five children born to the late Thomas and Helen Scott in Summerville, GA October 13, 1932. She was educated in the Chattooga County Public School System and graduated from A.C. Carter High School in 1953 and participated in various school activities. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, shopping for special outfits and fragrances, spending time and funning with her cousins and friends. She truly loved her family. At a very young age, Mary Helen was baptized and became a faithful member of Hemphill AME Zion Church in Summerville, GA. She taught Sunday school and participated in most church activities. After graduating from high school she worked at the elementary school level as a cafeteria staff member because she loved to cook and prepare special dishes. A few years later Mary moved to Detroit, MI to live with her favorite aunt. Some years later she moved to Saginaw, MI, got married and became the wonderful mother of two daughters and two sons. Mary Helen leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Jody Underwood, Cynthia Underwood, Todd Underwood, Anita Powell and Sandra (Ronald) Jackson; grandchildren, Deonte Bickham, Brina and Demetrius Pruiett, Christopher, Desmond, Archia, Destyni, Brina, Julius, Jordan and Deqavion Underwood; five great-grandchildren; sister, Dr. Fran Reeves, Atlanta, GA; brother, Robert Scott, Chattanooga, TN; special cousin, Mary Reed; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends, including special friends, Joann and Marie Donnaway. Mrs. Underwood was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Helen Scott; husband, Paul Underwood; son, Paul Underwood, Jr.; brothers, Thomas Scott, Jr. and Deforest Scott. The family would like to express special thanks to St. Mary’s of Michigan and 1st State Hospice. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607. Dr. Willie F. Casey will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
