Mr. Samuel Joseph "Joe" Gipson

On July 16, 2017, Samuel Joseph “Joe” Gipson gained his wings and went home to be with our Heavenly Father at the age of 79 years. He was born March 14, 1938 in Sheffield, Alabama, the son of John Westley Gipson Sr. and Katie Lee (Butts) Gipson. Samuel moved from Alabama to Bay City, MI then moved to Saginaw, MI. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Miles Franklin. Bro. Gipson was the janitor and groundskeeper for many years at the church. He loved his church, especially Sunday school. He retired from Flint Truck and Bus a division of General Motors and was a member of Local UAW 599 after 35 good years of work. Samuel loved fishing, music, and visiting with his grandkids and family. As a young man in the south he would pick over a bale of cotton to help his family. Samuel was a kind hearted person and a great story teller. Mr. Samuel Gipson married Miss. Florence Sullivan in 1955 together they had six children. Later on in life Joe met Miss Mildred G. Boyd and they became friends. He married her in 1993 and between the two of them they had a total of ten children. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Mildred G. Gipson; ten children, Samuel II (Beatrice), Levonda (Kay), Shelia, Kimberly, Fredricka Gipson, David (Rose) Southward, Willie Southward, all of Saginaw, MI, Gregory Southward of Lapeer MI, Carolyn Southward of Michigan City, IN, Gwendolyn (Ray) Gooding of Lima, OH; siblings, Mattie (George) Simpson of Fontana, CA, Clara (Charles) Davis of Bay City, MI, John Westland Gipson Jr. of Douglasville, GA, Bleache Baldwin of Pasadena, CA, Lucy (George) Simpson of Fontana, CA and Greer (Leon) Mency of Duarte, CA; sisters and brothers-in-law Pamela (Mosby) Clark, Juanita L. Boyd, Brenda (Billy) Johnson, Jerry and Micheal Boyd, all of Saginaw, MI; 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Gipson was preceded in death by his son, Samuel J. Gipson I; granddaughter, Shanika Southward; his parents, John Westley and Kathy L. Gipson; one brother William Adams; two sisters, Mary Alice Walker and Kathy Grant-West; grandparents; mother-in-law, Jeanette Boyd; one brother-in-law and three sisters -in-law. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2017 at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, 1114 North 6th Street, Saginaw, MI, Pastor Marvin T. Smith, host pastor. Elder Mosby Clark will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607 on Sunday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
