Ms. Susie Lee Mathis

Susie Lee (Brodus) Mathis was born August 24, 1942 in Leesburg, Florida. She passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at the age of 80 years old. She was the daughter of the late Lillie Mae (Jackson) Brodus and the late Oscar Brodus, Sr. She was a longtime resident of Carrollton, Michigan, who was well-known by many neighbors and community members. She first joined Lighthouse COGIC, then Hope Center COGIC and finally New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, planting beautiful flowers in her yard and cooking. During her early days, she loved fishing with friends, playing card games and riding the highways to visit family members and see the country. Susie leaves to cherish her memory six daughters: Evelyn Atkins (Leron) of Saginaw, MI, Kimberly Mathis of Saginaw, MI, Tami Houston of San Antonio, TX, Angelee Mathis of Saginaw, MI, Valerie Fortenberry of Carrollton, MI, and Tracy Coston (Larry) of Saginaw, MI; to cherish her memory 30 grandchildren, Anthony Mathis, Antwon Mathis, Andre Mathis, Kwanna Mathis, Demetria Mickens, Taushay Banks, Dwayne Mathis, Clifford Mathis, Jermaine Mathis, Crystal Mickens, Edmond Irvin, Willis Mickens, Dominic Houston, Tamiya Jolley, Marquita Jones, Malcolm Washington, Brandon Mathis, Trevor Fortenberry, Shaylaa Banks, Isaiah Washington, Twonnisha Mathis, April Montgomery, Jeannie Montgomery, Platinum Ringold, Gold Ringold, Nikita Montgomery, Solitaire Ringold, Tameka Coston, Vaniti Mathis, Frank Montgomery, Brianna Atkins and Larry Atkins, Jr.; She also leaves 52 great grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; also cherishing many memories are five nieces, Lillian Johnson, Dr. Dawn Brodus-Yougha, Whittney Brodus, Dahl Enoch and Dr. Melanie McCoy; five nephews, Harry Brodus, John Brodus, James Paris, Jr., Anthony Enoch and Lorenzo Brodus; special cousins, Sardester Marshall, and Yvonne Rider-McMilan and Leroy Kirnon; sisters-in-law, Dr. Sallie Brodus and Margaret Brodus; special friends, Nelson Terry, Felis Yrlas, Minister Kathy Dukes and Ruby Frazier. She was preceded in death by husband, Leo Mathis; two sons: Leo Mathis, Jr. and Willis Mathis; one sister, Magartha Paris; one brother, Oscar Brodus, Jr.; parents, Lillie Mae and Oscar Brodus, Sr.; stepfather, James Brodus; two grandchildren: Aaron Montgomery and Aknan Belvin and three great-grandchildren, Heavenly and Star Mathis and Bryson Mathis; special friends, Bertha Mae Webb, Willie Bea Johnson, Evone Matthews and Mae and Sam Johnson. The family would like to express special thanks to our family, many friends, our church families during our difficult time. For your visits, phone calls, the food and being “go getter” for us. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2022, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 1721 Tuscola Street, Saginaw, Michigan 48607. Dr. Willie F. Casey will officiate. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Ave., Saginaw, Michigan 48601.
