Ms. Virginia Newsome

Virginia Newsome, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, transitioned Monday, July 10, 2023 after a lengthy illness at the age of 80 years. She was born April 29, 1943 in Como, Mississippi to the late Ethel “Jack” and Mattie M. Webb the fifth child of 11 children. She professed Christ at an early age and united with the Cherry Street Baptist Church in Como, Mississippi. Virginia graduated from Como High School in Como, Mississippi and she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Mississippi a historical black college. She began her teaching career at Simmons High School, Hollandale, Mississippi in 1967. She relocated to Saginaw, Michigan in 1968. She began teaching Language Arts at Central Junior High School: later she was transferred to North Middle School. Virginia had a passion for teaching; motivating her students and making learning fun. She received North Middle School’s Young Educators Society Teacher of the Year Award in 1994: the Saginaw News Crystal Apple Award in 1993 and again in 1996. Virginia retired from Saginaw City School District in 1999 after teaching for 32 years. Her passion for teaching extended to the church where she taught Sunday School while affiliated with Freewill Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing and being an avid bible-reader, she read it prayerfully and carefully. Her favorite scripture was “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me” Philippians 4:13. Virginia leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Tony (Rachelle) Webb, Bay City, Michigan and Gerard Newsome Saginaw, Michigan; six grandchildren, Kadejah, Tayshawn and Tyre Webb, Luciana Burton, Tradgen and Jessica Newsome; six great-grandchildren, Cianni Garcia, Charles Gardner, Janiyah Webb, Ciara Webb, Coylee T. Talmage and Alize R. Woods; five sisters, Bernice (Jimmy) Moore and Irma Scott both of Saginaw, Michigan, Verleane Harris, Springfield, Massachusetts, Lois Johnson and Birda (Arthur) Trollinger both of Shelbyville, TN; two brothers, Jimmy (Earlean) Webb, Portage, MI, Earl (Teresa) Webb, Shelbyville, Tennessee and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Shontae; brothers, Ethel Junior and Tommy Webb and sister, Hattie M. Taylor. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Ascension of St. Mary’s and Saginaw Senior Care. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48607. Evangelist Verleane Harris will officiate. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 S. Washington, Saginaw, MI 48601. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
