Mr. Wilbert Long Sr.

Mr. Wilbert Long, Sr. at the age of 82 years, departed this life on August 26, 2024. He was born September 6, 1941 in Blytheville, Arkansas to William and Fannie Mae (Pollard) Long. Wilbert Long, Sr. moved with his family to Saginaw, Michigan at an early age and was a graduate of Saginaw High School. Shortly after graduation, Wilbert enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served a tour in Germany. Following his Honorable Discharge, he relocated to the Bronx, New York where he began his working career with the New York Transit Authority. Following his retirement, he returned to Saginaw, Michigan in 1991. Wilbert is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice (Whitten) Long, whom he married on July 26, 1978. They shared a life of love for over 46 years. Wilbert was the wonderful father of seven children, Wilbert (Daphney) Long, Jr., Alice (Richard) Bryan, Jimmie (Danielle) Long, Gwendolyn Long, Paulette Bigio, Paula Long, and Kathy Carter; he’s the grandfather of 17, Jameelah, Paris, Bre’on, Tia, Tynell, Olivia, Asia, Jahlil, Jabir, Ebony, Wilbert, Joselyn, Edwin, Jr., Tiffany, Chynna, Shukri and Cartrice, and the great-grandfather of 16. Wilbert was a very proud, strong, loving and compassionate man with an outstanding sense of humor. He enjoyed watching sports and had a strong penchant for cooking and watching others enjoy his food. He was a devoted member of the Glimpse of Hope Ministries, where he served as a Deacon. Wilbert is also survived by two brothers, James (Dorothy) Long, Muncie, IN and William Long, Saginaw, MI; one sister, Mary (George) Terry, Fairview, TX; one sister-in-law, Idella Long, Atlanta, GA; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including special friend since childhood, Mr. Tyrone Bryant and a special longtime friend, Georgia Blakes-Pierce. Mr. Wilbert Long, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, William and Fannie (Pollard) Long; daughter, Paula Long; brothers, Huey Long, Jimmie Long and David Long; many aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins. Wilbert will always be remembered by all that knew him. Countless stories have been told of his inspiration and encouragement to family and friends. His legacy of kindness, devotion and humor will live on within each of us. His love will be forever with us. The family would like to express sincere thanks to those who have offered prayers and medical support. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. Pastor Leslie Lewis will officiate. Interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, G4200 Belford Rd.,, Holly, Michigan 48442. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
