Mrs. Helen Hogan

Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 535 Cathay Street. Pastor P. David Saunders will officiate with interment in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Family will be present from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. to greet friends. Father, we entrust our mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to your mercy. You loved her greatly in this life: now that she is freed from all its cares, give her happiness and peace forever. Welcome her into Paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Helen Louise Drake was born October 1, 1929 in Greenville, Kentucky, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt Drake, Sr. and Johnetta Hawkins Drake. She came to Saginaw, Michigan at the age of 19 years old to live with her aunt, Floella Hawkins Bandy, affectionately known as “Aunt Pete.” Helen met and married Green H. Hogan, Jr. March 1951, together to their union they had 5 children, Arie Louise Hunter, Michael O’Shea Hogan, Ramona Denise Hogan, Carmen Maria Hogan and Felicia Lori Hogan, all of Saginaw, Michigan. Helen worked for St. Mary’s Hospital as a nurse in various capacities which included Pediatrics, Emergency Room, Burn unit and the Cardiology unit. Helen retired from St. Mary’s hospital after 32 years of service. She was a committed and active member of Bethel AME Church serving in the Cup of Water Ministry, Tuesday Night Bible Study, the Retiree’s Club and as Secretary of the Christina M. Goines Missionary Society. Helen was also a delegate for Church Women United, an organization founded with the Vision of Christian Unity and Prayerful Action. Earlier in her life she was a faithful member of Emmanuel St. Marks and Lion’s Club International. She was dedicated to doing things with excellence, particular about how things were done and that they were done just right. Good enough wasn’t enough when in her pursuit of perfection. Her hobby was staying active and caring for others. Helen loved family gatherings and attending events that her family members were involved in. Mrs. Helen Louise Hogan leaves to cherish her memory; her children, Michael Hogan, Ramona Hogan, Carmen Hogan and Felicia Hogan; 13 grandchildren, two of which she raised, Terrence “Terry” Hogan and Kahreem “Shea” Hogan; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edmond (Anna) Drake and John (Maria) Drake; two sisters, Estelle Goins and Mary Sue Gardner; one god-son, Darrell Clay; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Hogan was preceded by her parents, Theodore Roosevelt Drake, Sr. and Johnetta Hawkins-Drake; one daughter, Arie Hunter; and two brothers, Theodore “Sonny” Drake and William “Bill” Drake.
