Mrs. Shirley A. Young

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at the age of 67 years, our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, Shirley A. Young peacefully made her transition to be with the Lord. She was born October 12, 1954 in Schlater, Mississippi, daughter of Percy L. Summerall and Littie A. Holland -Summerall-Woodard. In 1957 Shirley relocated to Cleveland, Ohio from Greenwood, Mississippi with her parents and five siblings. She attended elementary in the Cleveland Public Schools later relocated to Saginaw, Michigan in 1967 with her mother, step-father and two sisters. There she attended Arthur Eddy Middle School and graduated from Saginaw High School in 1973 where she met her best friend and love of her life Elbert aka Truck. Shirley continued her education at Delta College, Saginaw, Michigan until she joined in the union of marriage with her husband on May 8, 1976. From there she traveled with her husband in the US Army from Oklahoma to Fort Knox Kentucky. Mrs. Shirley enjoyed reading books, traveling, cooking, fishing, shopping, growing flowers, decorating, listening to music, working with and meeting new people. Thus, leading her to earn her state certification on June 16, 1990 as a Nurse Assistant through the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services. This granted her the opportunity to work as a Home Health Care Nurse for such companies as, A & D Home Health Care, Baxman. She was certified as a Mental Health Tech at Crisis Residential Treatment Program and later worked with the child development programs of Saginaw Township Schools and Saginaw I.S.D. Head Start. Mrs. Shirley Young grew up in a Christian home and attended the Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, assisted in the youth department, and helped develop programs and outings such as bowling, and skating. She enjoyed volunteering her time during special events in the kitchen and being one of the hostesses to help serve food. Shirley continued her spiritual growth by viewing, supporting, and praying with her son, Shannon and daughter-in-law’s church out of Orlando, Florida where she was a member. Mrs. Shirley enjoyed traveling with her youngest son, DeAndre with the Saginaw High School Drumline and Band. Mrs. Shirley always encouraged her family and friends through her pearls of wisdom and easily related to all her nieces and nephews. When Mrs. Shirley was in the room, she loved to have the room uplifted with laughter, love and smiles. Shirley leaves to cherish her memories husband, Elbert L. Young, Jr.; two sons, Shannon E. (Nydetra) Young, Orlando, Florida, DeAndre L. Young, Grand Rapids, Michigan; granddaughter, Ceirra Outlaw, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , two sisters, Betty (Albert) Mitchell, Cleveland, Ohio, Marchelle (Derric) Martin, Saginaw, Michigan; two brothers, Percy L. (Nyoka) Summerall, Jr., Cleveland, Ohio and James L. (Susan) Summerall, Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, Inez Summerall, Saginaw, Michigan and Peggy Ann Summerall; one aunt, Christean James, Chicago, Illinois a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including two adopted grandchildren, Mordeke Presbury and Keith Miles and special friend Alicia Sandifer (Big Baby) (Lisa). Mrs. Shirley Young was preceded in death by her father, Percy L. Summerall, Sr.; mother, Little A. Holland-Summerall-Woodard; step-father, Maurice Woodard; brothers Sylvester Summerall, Elvie Eugene Summerall; sister, Annie L. Moultrie and Bobbie J. Summerall; paternal and maternal grandparents. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Great Lakes Rehab Center, Avista Nursing & Rehab, and Covenant HealthCare. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, Michigan 48607. Pastor Shannon Young, Officiating and Rev. Lee Arthur Thomas, Presiding. Interment will take place in Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd., Holly, Michigan 48442. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m.
