Mr. Steven Nathaniel Robinson

Our beloved Steven Nathaniel Robinson passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at the age of 82. The son of the late Willie and Geneva Robinson, he was born February 25, 1936, in Newellton, Louisiana. As a young man, he moved to Saginaw, Michigan, and lived with his oldest sister, Victoria Straughter. Sometime after his arrival, he began working at a General Motors plant. In 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces and was decorated as a marksman and sharpshooter before being honorably discharged in 1959. Two years later, on June 25, 1961, he married Lizzie Mae Dillard of Newellton, LA. They began their life together in Saginaw, MI, and in the next four years, had two children: Reginald and Sonya. Determined, focused and hard-working, Steve studied at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, MI, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting. He went on to become an accountant for General Motors Corporation and, later, one of its traveling auditors, retiring in the early ‘80s. A Christian, Steve served for several years as a deacon and Adult Sunday School teacher at Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Saginaw, MI. He cared deeply about social justice and civil rights and sought to make a difference in his “corner of the world.” In recognition of his civic involvement, Steve received the General Motors Award for Excellence in Community Activities. A proud lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, he also was a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P. and previously served on the Saginaw Board of Appeals on Zoning and the Saginaw Housing Commission. Steve was fiercely protective of his family, providing consistent love and support not only for his immediate family, but also for his extended family. He especially adored his grandsons and never missed a single birthday party, from the time they were toddlers to teenagers. In his earlier years, his favorite pastimes included fishing, gardening, shooting pool, playing baseball and golfing. In later years, he enjoyed going to weekly catfish lunches at Saginaw’s Horizons Conference Center with friends Robert Woods, Joe Stephens, John Torrence and Jimmie Moore. To cherish his precious memory are his wife of 57 years, Lizzie Robinson of Saginaw, MI; children, Reginald Robinson, Saginaw, Sonya (George) Baker, Indianapolis, IN, Steve Canty of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Randall Robinson, Chicago, IL, Geordan Baker, Los Angeles, CA, Tyler Baker, Indianapolis, IN, and Samuel Johnson, Killeen, TX; sister, Genevieve Hymes, Columbus, OH; godson, Maurice Taylor, Saginaw, MI; many special nieces and nephews, along with a host of dear relatives and friends, including special friends, Michael Thomas and the Gaddis and Stephens families. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Geneva Robinson; several siblings, including Rev. Gather Robinson, Rev. Cather Robinson, Victoria Straughter, Elijah Robinson, Inez Hill, Rev. Cornelius Robinson, Elease Branch, Bondell Cross and Hesikiah Robinson; grandson, Reginald Brown and childhood friend, Otis Butterfield. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607. Pastor Roy Manning will officiate with interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607 on Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will conduct it's service at 7:00 p.m.
