Mrs. Bernice H. Scott

“Giving honor to God, who is the head of my life…” Bernice Hughes Scott gave God “all the glory and the praise,” and it was her goal to live her life for Him every day. This is the spirit that our Mother displayed most every day of her life. It was this Spirit that she took home with her, “going from labor to reward”, to be with the Father. She passed away on January 21, 2018 at her home surrounded by her children. She lived for 95 blessed years, and this is her Home Going!! This is the Celebration of Her Life! Mrs. Scott was born in Kimball, West Virginia to Rufus and Henrietta White Hughes. She was an only child. In her youth, she enjoyed going to the movies, reading, attending church with her maternal grandmother, (whom she called “Mama”), singing, roller skating and many other activities. She was graduated from Kimball Negro High School in 1940 where she met and later married her high school sweetheart Lorman S. Scott on January 25, 1941. He preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Scott were married for 47 years and had six children together. H. Ann (Ray) Jones, Lucinda “Cindy” Scott Jones, Kristie (Rex) Jones, Brenda (Richard) Dawkins, Bryan S. Scott and son, Lorman B. Scott who also preceded her in death in 1994. Following his service in the Navy, during World War II, Mr. And Mrs. Scott raised their family in Carrollton, MI where they would see their young family grow. Mrs. Scott accepted Christ at an early age, and after moving to Michigan, she joined Ninth Street Community Church (9th Street) Pastored by William L. Scott, Jr. Bernice treasured her time at church where she served on the following; a member of the Senior Choir, the Adult Usher Board, and the Mennonite Women’s Group, the director of 9th Street Vacation Summer Bible School and as one of the first female congregants to serve on the Pastor’s Leadership Committee. Mrs. Scott was also enthusiastic about her community work. She was a member of the Bethel AME Church Retirees Club, she was one of the first African-Americans to serve on the Carrollton Public School Board, she belonged to the VFW Post #2622-Buena Vista Post, the Carrollton Community Club, the Carrollton PTA, she was a former member of the Carrollton Senior Citizen’s Club and she offered her time to help register new voters. She attended Delta College, worked as a Teacher’s Aide/Assistant at Carrollton Union School and as a Social Worker for the Community Action Committee located in Saginaw, MI. She loved people, and she loved to travel. Besides her children, Mrs. Scott leaves 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is, daughter-in-law, Lois Scott-Kelly; three dear sisters-in-law, Roberta Johnson, Pearl M. Heilig and Patricia Scott; two adopted daughters, Geneva Bolton and Shirley Dawkins; a dear friend, Mrs. Caroline Fisher. Mrs. Scott was also preceded in death respectively by a granddaughter, Princess Alana Scott; grandsons, Rex A. Jones, II, Jerome B. Scott; two great-grandsons, Johnson Laster, Jr., Christin J. McCants; two nephews, William B. Heilig, Jr. and Lorman S. Heilig, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, Williams and Geraldine Scott; two brothers-in-law, Robert Scott and William Heilig, Sr. A special thank you to “Jean” and the Dalton family, and her son Bill for all the kindness shown to our mother during the years. The Bernice H. Scott Family would like to thank the staff of Covenant Healthcare-Cooper, Covenant Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) Hospice, especially Tiffany, Theresa and Nameen for all of their support and kindness, the Mobile Medical Response, the Visiting Nurses Lifeline and all of the special volunteers that delivered daily, Meals On Wheels. Gifts of flowers are welcome and or please give donations to the American Heart Association or to the National Kidney Foundation, to Meals On Wheels of America @ (mealsonwheelsamerica.org) or contact your local Commission on Aging. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Ninth Street Community Church, 1118 North 9th Street. Pastor William L. Scott, Jr. will officiate with entombment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 950 North Center Road, Saginaw, MI 48603. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
