Mr. Grant Lay, Jr.

Mr. Grant J. Lay Jr. was born October 18, 1950 in Biloxi, MS. and attended school thus completing his educational endeavors at the eleventh-grade level. He was the son born to Mr. Grant J. and Mrs. Jewell (Mallett) Lay Sr. who have both preceded him in death. Mr. Grant J. Lay Jr. was a resident of the Flint, MI but decided to relocate to Saginaw, MI where he lived out his final days. He passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the age of 70 years old. He was a person who enjoyed life and lived it on his own terms. He was quite a character who loved to dance even to the point of having his nieces and nephews doing the “Uncle Jr” dance. He loved to do a dance that he choreographed with his sister Clydie, who was his favorite dance partner, called “Dig the Potatoes”. He was full of life and a great time was to be enjoyed whenever you had the pleasure of being in his company. He was funny and thought himself to be quite the comedian. He loved all his nieces and nephews and never missed an opportunity to make them laugh. He had a deep love for music. He loved to hunt and fish with his dad and brother Larry. He also enjoyed playing in the band with his brother Larry playing at various gigs. He was a hard worker holding his first job at General Motors, Buick Division. He was employed with the Top Hat Car Wash and Al’s Clean Up Shop as an auto detailer, and the Redball Taxicab Company as a taxicab driver. He was a hard worker and loved to tinker with automobiles. He was an extraordinary mechanic and guitarist. Grant J. Lay Jr. leaves to cherish his memory, three children; Santee Roberts of GA, Quinshonda Blackmon of Kentucky, and Derrace Blackmon of Michigan, 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; three sisters Delores Austin of Missouri, Clydie Powell of Saginaw, MI and Lynn Anderson of Flint, MI; two brothers, Thomas Lay of Illinois, Larry (Inez) Lay of Flint, MI; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one aunt, Nora Turner of Saginaw, MI. A host of other relatives and friends including an incredibly special sister-in-law who was more like his sister, Bertha Lay of Saginaw, MI. Mr. Grant Lay Jr. was also preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Lay and one brother, James Lay. The family would like to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concern, and kindness shown to us during this time of bereavement. The family would like to express special thanks to the hospital staff of St. Mary’s Ascension Hospital and our dear sister Bertha Lay who provided her loving and attentive care until the very end of the life of our dear brother Mr. Grant J. Lay Jr. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48607. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Visitation will be take place 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
