Mr. Igister "Gus" Junior Turner

Igister “Gus” Junior Turner, our patriarch, protector, provider and teacher, (affectionately known as Gus and Junior to his family) transitioned from this life after a valiant, courageous fight with CHF, into the arms of our Lord and Savior on August 14, 2020. Gus was a life-long resident of Saginaw, Michigan. He was born September 11, 1953, to late the Igister Turner, Sr. and Minnie Mae (Bostic) Turner at Saginaw General Hospital. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior. While attending Trinity Lutheran Church, he served as a member of the Transportation Ministry, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Gus began his formal education with Saginaw Public Schools, nurturing his love of learning and athletics at Potter Elementary, and Arthur Eddy Junior High. He was a graduate of Arthur Hill Technical High School. His athleticism was exceptional. His work ethic and commitment to excel when facing new challenges proved true with his athletics. Gus’ leadership, strength, fitness and agility lead him to being selected for the 1970-71 Saginaw News Class B All-Area basketball team. “Gus Turner, Arthur Hill Tech – ‘Sharpshooter’ averaged 21.1 points per game”. At the age of 18, Gus began working for General Motors, Malleable Iron – Central Foundry. He was a member of UAW Local 455. After years of working in various departments, he earned his Journeyman Card and was promoted to Skills Trade Pattern Maker. Anticipating the closure of the Malleable Iron Central Foundry, in 2001, Gus transferred to Grey Iron - Saginaw Metal Casting Operations. He was a member of the IAM Local 2839. As a member of the SMI Safety Team and a Team Leader, Gus continued to exhibit impeccable work ethic and commitment to his patriarch role as a father and companion, leading by example for his children. Work colleagues became family; two special friendships include, William Doxie and Ruben Garcia. After 41 years of dedicated service, Gus retired from General Motors in 2013. Soon after retirement Gus found himself working for McDonald’s Pontiac Car Dealership as part of the service team in customer service until his health declined. Gus absolutely LOVED sports. For every sport he played earning a trophy was his ultimate goal. He played fast pitch baseball with Saginaw City Adult Recreational Division at Veterans Memorial Park for a few seasons. However, he found his niche with softball slow pitch. Gus played for the Diamond T/Creative 8 Team for the Saginaw City Adult Recreational Division. He developed many life-long friendships with his teammates. Besides softball, Gus bowled in a number of bowling leagues and shot pool with the Bowen brothers, P. Carter and A. Smith each week. By far, golf was his most cherished sport. After twenty plus years of perfecting his short game and putting, he was proud of his even par score card with his competitors being equally impressed. The consummate teacher, Gus taught golf to family and friends, even his daughter developed a nice swing off the tee. Gus enjoyed playing lottery, especially Cash Word Crossword Puzzles, bingo, casino, card games with family and friends. Weekly family gatherings at Minnie Ma’s house was a staple for the Turner Family. Playing base ten (Mug) dominoes was his ultimate favorite. He earned the nickname “Gissie” for his antics and humor while playing. Gus was married to Mildred Turner and to this union two children were born: Sherie S. Turner and Igister Junior Turner III. Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Earlean Turner. He is survived by sons; Mark L. Reedy (Rachel Williams), David L. (Tonya) Reedy, Timothy T. Reedy, and Brian K. (Barbara) Reedy. He is survived by his companion of 20 years, Elizabeth Vance and his bonus sons, Korey D. Vance, Kwentin D. Tucker and Kwincy J. Tucker. Mr. Igister Junior Turner leaves to cherish his memory: children, Sherie S. Turner of Willoughby Hills, OH; sons, Igister J. Turner III and Mark Reedy, both of Saginaw, MI; three grandchildren, LaTonya Vernisha, Imani Sherie, and Brianna Chardonnay; two great-grandchildren, A’iden Kartez and Kyler Iman. Memories of his kindness, generosity and sense humor will be cherished by his mother, Minnie Mae (Turner) Clayton; two sisters, Irma Turner (Marshall Ward) and Annette Turner; sister-in-law, Laura Turner; a host of nieces, nephews, extended families, Donalds, Robys and Campbells; a special nephew, Deion Donald and special friend, Anthony Essex; friends and neighbors in his beloved neighborhood of twenty years. Gus was also preceded in death by his father, Igister Turner Sr.; step-father, Galloway Clayton; brothers, Edgar, Leroy, Bobbie, and James Turner. The Turner family extends a heartfelt thank you for the care, support and guidance of their beloved to the Covenant Medical Center; the Heart Cardiologist team, Family Medical Primary Care team, the Visiting Nurse Association, and Kidney Disease & Hypertension Consultants. Thank you to all of his doctors, nurses and office managers for treating him like a “rock star” during visits. Visitation will take place from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2020, at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. A private funeral will be held. Pastor Curtis Johnson will officate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 S. Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601.
