Jerry Tate Jr.

Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Saint Mary’s Medical Center after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old. Our beloved father was born on May 5, 1923 in Starksville, MS, the son of the late Frank D. Tate and Mary E. Tate. He accepted Christ at an early age. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He married Helen Haines Tate on May 5, 1946 and they spent many beautiful years together. She preceded him in death in 1984. From that union, they were blessed with four children. He later married Iola Simmons, who preceded him in death in 2009. Mr. Tate retired from the Grey Iron Foundry and was a member of the UAW Local 668. He was a long-time member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching sports, politics and old western movies. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Jerry, Charles (Edith) and Larry Tate and one daughter, Min. Doris (John) Murry, all of Saginaw, MI. His memory will also be cherished by his seven grandchildren, special granddaughter, Nakita Murry of Atlanta, GA, Nicole, John Jr. and Natosha Murry, Shalona Brown, Tanya (Anthony) Harrison and Jerry Tate III, all of Saginaw, MI; six great-grandchildren, JaQuan Penny, Shariona Smith, Aariona Smith, Jaliyah Brown, Mya Moore, all of Saginaw, MI, and Azaria Murry of Lansing, MI. Jerry Tate will be dearly missed by his only living sibling, his brother Abdual (Marie) Rashada; five sisters-in-law, Jennie Lee and Rosa Mary Garrett of Saginaw, MI, Ida Mae Tate of Starksville, MS, Ola Mae Haines of St. Louis, MO and Sally Tate of Flint, MI; and a host of other relatives and friends, including a special niece, Mary Francis Champion, and devoted family and friends, Walter (Chops) Gipson, Oralia Donald and her children and the entire Findley Street area neighbors and friends. Mr. Tate was preceded in death by parents, Frank D. Tate and Mary E. Tate; four sisters, Ruthie Mae Bell, Sydonia Fox, Fannie L. Jenkins and Sadie Moore; and three brothers, Willie, Millon and Judge Tate. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 810 Cathay Street. Pastor Thomas J. London will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
