Ms. Lizzie Garner

Our beloved mother made her transition to be with the Lord on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Lizzie Williams was born to the union of Robert Williams and Matilda Porter Harp on April 5, 1929 in Winterville, Mississippi. Lizzie Williams accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1941 at the age of 12 years. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School for nine years and Coleman High School where she was the Captain of the girls’ basketball team. She sported Jersey #6. She graduated from Coleman High School on May 26, 1950, and moved to Saginaw, Michigan from Greenville, Mississippi in June of 1953. She worked at Cook’s Restaurant as a 3rd shift cook and she also worked at Saginaw General Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. Mrs. Garner was a member of God’s Tabernacle of Truth Church located in Flint, Michigan under the leadership of the late Bishop Richard W. Mosley. Ms. Williams met, and later married Henry Albert Garner on June 13, 1954. To this union five children were born. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals for family and friends. She was known for baking her Caramel and Seven-Up Pound Cakes. Mrs. Garner leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Beverly Garner and one son, Bradley Garner both of Saginaw, MI; first cousins, Essex Porter, Kent, Washington, Shelly Mae Porter, Greenville, MS, Marsha Carter, Flint, MI, Dennis Porter and Thomas Douglas Carter both of Saginaw, and Larry Porter, Detroit, MI. She was very fond of her younger cousins, Rhonda Atkins, Tara Henderson and Lance Henderson all of Saginaw, Greta Peyton Terry and Alva Peyton Taylor, Jackson, MS; two nieces, Mary Drake and Earnestine Evans, both of Saginaw; special god-daughters that were like daughters, Patricia Foreman Barry, Houston, TX, and Mary Ann Guyton, Saginaw; one god-son, Trayvon Foreman, Houston, TX who she loved and helped raise as her very own son; a very dear friend like a sister, Mary B. Johnson, Yorktown, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Garner; two sons, Albert Garner, Jr. and Byron Garner; her parents, Robert Williams and Matilda Porter Harp; one sister, Mary Johnson; grandparents, Willis and Mary (Smith) Porter, Sr. and one god-son, Ray Parker, Jr. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. ViJay Chaku and staff, the NITCU Unit of Covenant Health-care Cooper 4th floor and Dr. Omer Mezier. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607. Dr. Marvin T. Smith will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 South Washington Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48601. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607 on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
