Mrs. Marie M. Matthews

On Monday, December 9, 2024 God called Mrs. Marie Magelene (Flowers) Matthews’ soul to rest and comfort at the age of 95 years from Covenant Healthcare Cooper in Saginaw, Michigan. She was 95 years. Marie was born on June 5, 1929 in Brundidge, Alabama to the parents of Alex and Jasie Bell (Snell) Flowers. She received her education at Cross Road School in Brundidge, Alabama and D.A. Smith School in Ozark, Alabama where she loved playing basketball alongside her siblings John and Mamie. They were basketball stand outs winning many games. She also was a Sunday school teacher in Alabama. Marie was married to Coley Lee Matthews for 66 years. The family moved to Saginaw, Michigan in 1951. Mrs. Matthews was a lovely wife, loving mother and was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed listening to her son, Eddie “Butch” play the saxophone. She was a longtime, very faithful, active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church Saginaw. She was in the Busy Bees Club of Bethel. In the State Rally Fund Raisers held at the church, Marie served as the Governor of Alabama raising more funds than anyone in the church for a number of years after which she was affectionately known as The Queen of Bethel A.M.E. Church. “Queen” enjoyed attending worship service and giving financial support; she loved her church. Marie affectionately known as “Queen” enjoyed cooking, traveling to family and friends for Family Reunions in Canton, Ohio, Clairton, PA, Alabama and other places. She enjoyed dressing from “Head to toe” with the perfect hat for every lovely outfit. She was an avid basketball fan and coached every game from her favorite chair in her living room. Mrs. Matthews leaves to cherish her memory one devoted daughter and son-in-law, Elnora (Joe) Washington, Saginaw; three grandchildren, Cion Washington, Saginaw, Robert Earl Davis and Andre Davis both of Las Vegas, NV; a sister-in-law, Lottie Jones of Ozark, AL; god-children, Joseph and Diane Chaney, Houston and Elaine Jackson, Martha Lockhart; god-grandchildren, Dwight, Kashara and Janice Rance, Letisha and Vernon Randle, Alisa and Demetrius Chaney; host of nieces, nephews and cousins including special cousins, Gwen, Linda, Cynthia and Ralph Martin, the families of Tissurene Casey, Arthur Gissendanner, Odhalia Rance, Janis Porter, Dorothy Perkins, Grance Reeves, Linwood and Dora Gissendanner. Mrs. Marie Mageline Matthews was preceded in death by her husband Coley Matthews; daughter Debra Davis; a son, Eddie Matthews; and twin babies; an infant grandchild; her siblings, Delbert (Orsie Mae) Flowers, James (Fan) Flowers, John (Emma) Flowers, Earlie Flowers, Mamie (Clarence) Rowe; son-in-law, Robert Davis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearlie (James) Johnson, Amelia (Larry) McAllister, Lois Ann Matthews, Gracie Gaines and Benjamin Matthews; a host of other dear relatives and friends. “ We want to thank all the doctors and nurses for helping my mother” We Love her! She was the best wife and mother. We all send her love, kisses and hugs. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Bethel AME Church, 535 Cathay St., Saginaw, MI 48601. Rev. Dr. Dennis Laffoon will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service
