Mary Ellen Taylor

Ms. Mary Ellen Taylor, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt and friend, made her transition to her eternal home on Monday, September 9, 2013 at the blessed age of 98 years. Mary Ellen Liles was born on September 12, 1914 in Wadesboro, NC, one of 12 children born to John and Catherine Liles. She graduated from high school in North Carolina. She was a born again Christian, accepting Christ at an early age. After coming to Saginaw, MI in 1939, she joined Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully, organizing the first Junior Choir from her Sunday School class and singing in the Gospel Chorus, until her health failed. Mary Ellen was married to Howard Taylor, who preceded her in death. To that union, one child was born. Mary Ellen was a member of the Sojourner Truth Chapter, now known as Bright Star, Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed raising chickens, her dog and tending to her garden. She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her devoted daughter, Yvonne Cooper; one grandson, Maurice (Jill) Cooper; two great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Marquetta Carroll and Maurice Jones; one great-great-grandchild, Maryah Burton; two adopted grandchildren, Yvennia Cooper and Dion Cooper; a special niece, Sadie Steward; two special nephews, Stevie and Ronnie Gaddy; two godchildren, Alex (Frances) Farrell and Rubie (Jerry) White; and many, many nieces, nephews and friends, including special friends, Evelena Jones, Aunt Cleo, Daisy Taylor, Pearlie Gaither, and many dear special children, including Tyrone and Dorothy Bryant, Cheryl, Para and Winnie. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Liles; her husband, Howard Taylor; all of her sisters and brothers; and two grandchildren, Gregory Moten and Keith Cooper. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 810 Cathay Street. Pastor Leslie Lewis will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., on Sunday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. The family will be present at 6:00 p.m. for the family hour.
