Mrs. Sarah Mae Works-Blakely

Sarah Mae Works Blakely was born on March 14, 1956 in Union Springs, Alabama to Major Shell and Lelea Mae Calhoun. She passed away on June 16, 2021 at the age of 65 years. Sarah later moved to Saginaw, Michigan at the age of 5 with her uncle and aunt, Willie Works and Katie Works who later adopted her as their own. She attended Saginaw Public Schools and was a graduate of Saginaw High School, “Class of 1975”. She met the love of her life, Jerry Blakely and were joined in Holy Matrimony in 1981. Sarah was the best seamstress in town and had been sewing since she was 14 years old. She would make a dress in “one hour”! She was employed as a seamstress at Quality Drycleaners, American Drycleaners and Suburban Drycleaners, she worked for more than 30 years. She also employed part-time at the Saginaw Civic Center for many years. In addition, she started her own business, S Simply Fabulous Fashions and worked from home and designed and made one-of-a-kind clothing. She grew up and was a believer at a very young age, she loved the Lord. She enjoyed studying the scriptures in the bible and knew them by heart. She enjoyed and loved sewing. She was a great cook and loved cooking meals every day making homemade pound cakes, sweet potato pies and more, and most important of all, spending time with her family who she loved very much! Sarah was a quiet and private woman when it came to her family and business affairs. She was very helpful to her husband and loved him dearly. She was a true “helpmeet”. Mrs. Sarah Mae Works Blakely leaves to cherish many great-memories, her husband, Jerry Blakely; her daughter and best friend, Tarsha Works; step-son which she loved as her own son, Jerry Markeith Blakely, Troy, AL; sisters, Annie Lee Ross and Annie Seal Baskin both of Saginaw, Marion Calhoun, Jonesborough, GA and Jennie (Terry) Calhoun, Davenport, FL; brothers, Kenneth Calhoun, Kissimmee, FL, Bill Calhoun, Jr., Lake Wales, FL and Willie Calhoun, Davenport, FL; brothers-in-law, Arthur Blakely and Brady Charles Blakely, Las Vegas, NV, Aaron Blakely and Marshall (Lynn) Blakely both of Saginaw, and Tommie (Cassandra) Blakely, Fitzpatrick, Al,; sisters-in-law, Barbara Brown, Los Angeles, CA, Minnie (Luther) Reynolds, Mattie Pritchett and Sadie Reynolds all of Fitzpatrick, AL; nephews, Willie (Tara) Works, Lansing, MI, William Ross III, Kenneth Calhoun, Jr., Bill Calhoun III, Vernon Calhoun, Franklin Calhoun, Jevaris and Tevin Calhoun, Michael, Tyrone and Kenny Baskin; nieces, Veronica Calhoun, Jennifer Baskin, Monique and Kierra Calhoun; like grandchildren but great-nephews, Carmelo Works and Noah Gonzales, both of Lansing, MI; god-daughter, Jamaia Donald, Murfreesboro, TN ; three uncles, James Arthur Iverson, Tampa, FL, tom Simmons, Jr. and Henry Simmons, both of Cornerstone, AL; three aunts, Bennie Watson, Haines City, FL, Josephine Mims, Cornerstone, AL and Katie Ruth (Frazier) Townsend, Saginaw; a host of other nephews, nieces, many relatives, extended family members and those in the Saginaw community who dearly loved her and will miss her including special friends, Kathleen Samuel, Sarah Murphy, Charlene Hill and Ivy Menzie and those names who we missed. Sarah was preceded in death by her loving mother, Lelea Mae Calhoun; her father, Major Shell; her adopted mother and father, Willie Works and Katie Works; brother, Henry Calhoun; nephew, Vincent Calhoun; brother-in-law, Nehemiah Blakely; sisters-in-law, Emma Smith and Essie Pearl Page. Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home with Pastor James Hodge officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
