Mr. Sidney Diggs, Jr.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2015 one who we loved and knew was taken from us. Sidney Diggs, Jr. was born August 24, 1924 to a loving and caring family in Byhalia, MS. He was the son of the late Willie and Mattie (Freeman) Diggs. Mr. Diggs served in the United States Army during World War II as a medic, military police and truck driver. While serving in the Army, during World War II in Normandy and France, he received two Bronze Star Medals for heroic and meritorious service. After being honorably discharged he earned his certification as a skilled brick mason, licensed auto mechanic and a cardiopulmonary specialist at the Kennedy Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, TN. Sidney moved his family from Memphis, TN to Saginaw, MI in 1953 and became a member of Wadsworth Presbyterian Church. He continued to worship there until the time of a congregational merger with Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was a member and served as a deacon. Professionally he continued to work as a nurse’s assistant at the Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Medical Center for 36 years. Socially he was affiliated with M.W. Prince Hall F. & A.M.M. of Tennessee as a Master Mason from October 1951 until his death. He was a hard worker and enjoyed life and his family. He was always ready to lend a hand to a person in need. Mr. Diggs memory will be cherished by his daughter, Shirley (John) Sangster; three sons, Sidney (Kermit) Diggs IV, Bobby Diggs and Kevin (Carolyn) Diggs, all of Saginaw, MI; eleven grandchildren, Danielle Diggs, Belleville, MI, Tanisha (Roger) Taylor, Kimara (Barrett) Glover, both of Redford, MI, Jon (Clea) Sangster, Columbus, OH, Seth Diggs, Queens, NY, Valdemar (Sybol) Hill, St. Charles, MO, Josetta, Vashti and Kenya Diggs, all of Saginaw, MI, Floyd (Jan) Sangster, San Diego, CA and Edward (Monifa) Harrison, Jr., Trenton, NJ; nine great-grandchildren, Sydney Taylor, Jeremy and Tristan Harrison, Mercedes and Justin Sangster, Calil Sangster, Jackson Hill, Jahsaan and Brittany Glover; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Mr. Diggs was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mattie Diggs; his wife of 69 years, Vashti Myrtis Diggs; his brother, Alston Diggs; and his great-granddaughter, Sanaa Taylor. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church, 612 Millard Street. Pastor James Williams will officiate with interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. Friends may call at the Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 North Jefferson Avenue on Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. for a family hour.
