Mr. Thomas McKinney

Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at the age of 83 years after a long illness. He was born March 6, 1943 in Saginaw, Michigan the son of Claude Sr. and Lillie Mae (James) McKinney. Tommy attended Potter Elementary School, Central Junior High School and was a graduate of Saginaw High Adult Education, “Class of 1978.” He was the first African American retiree of Consumers Energy Utility Company in Saginaw. He loved fishing, all sports, especially basketball, football, baseball, boxing, and auto racing and was a collector of popular music classics, especially rhythm and blues, and gospel. Tommy was a natural musician who could play piano by ear, and he was a natural athlete playing ball in junior high, high school and winning community championships. He was a professional landscaper, master fisherman, master gardener, and community supporter of sports and fishing. His ‘Tommy’s Fishing Club’ was active for over a decade with annual fishing tournaments on the Saginaw River. Tommy loved his family, many friends and the Saginaw Community. He leaves to cherish his memory daughters, Yvette (Gilbert) Jones of Toledo, OH, Renee McKinney-Hollis and Darlyne McKinney, both of Saginaw MI, and Kym McKinney of Toledo, OH; sons, Derryck McKinney of Lapeer, MI and Vince Warren, of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Erica, Shayla, David, Ronald, Randell Porter, Sharmayne, Kennedi, Jazznon, Autumn, Patrick, Davon, Teakeysa, Talea, and Frank; great-grandchildren, Shyanne, Darnell, James Jr., Cortez, Christian, Gabriel, Cammeron, Darin, Del’asia, Jacob, Leela, Vince III, Trentin, King, Taiyoh and Lathan; great-great-grandchildren, Lyric, Kalalaya, Khaloni and Kory; sister, Beverly McKinney of Ann Arbor, MI and brother, David (Anita) McKinney of Farmington Hills, MI; sister-in-law, Bobbie McKinney of Saginaw, MI; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins including special nephews, Joe Hoggs aka J.J. and Pastor William Brown and special foster families, Jessie, Jaquita, Myrickle, Jana’y, Jiselle, Derrick E. and Harold R. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Sr. and Lillie Mae McKinney; sister, Lillie Mae Hoggs; four brothers, Claude Jr., John Edward, Willie Preston and Lawrence Harry McKinney; grandsons, James Aaron Rosas Sr., Vince Reynolds II, Anthony Neff and baby boy Hasan; brother-in-law, Joseph R. Hoggs; sisters-in-law, Sandra McKinney and Phylliss McKinney; son-in-law, Harland Hollis. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Michael W. Sjoding with University of Michigan Medicine Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MI; Dr. Bei Liu and staff with OHA Associates Saginaw, MI; Dr. James Fugazzi and staff with Covenant Radiation Center Saginaw, MI and Covenant Healthcare ICU, Saginaw, MI. Family hour will take place at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. Min. William Brown will officiate. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
