Mr. Winston L. Butler

Our devoted, amazing, and irreplaceable father, Winston Butler, passed away suddenly, Monday, February 5, 2018 at the age of 73 in his "home." Winston, also known as "Butler or “Mr. Butler," was born the last of thirteen children to Allie (Glass) and Rev. Captain Leonard Butler on May 23, 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Westfield High School before moving to Michigan and graduated in 1963 from Detroit Northeastern High School. Through the spiritual guidance of Mother Willie Mae Merkerson (“T”), he became a member of Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, where he enjoyed being a part of the Laymen’s. Our father was a hard worker and took pride in taking care of his home. Winston was a member of UAW Local 668 and was a foreman at the Saginaw General Motors-Grey Iron Foundry. He retired, what we considered too early, in 1988 with over 30 years of service. Our father loved the outdoors, and had enjoyed spending his spare time deer and squirrel hunting, and feasting on wild game. He loved rebuilding his cars and motorcycles with horse power and often referred to them as his “toys.” Our father loved family reunions, picnics and his family. He openly cherished the special memories and times he shared with his children. Winston was a strong advocate of making sure that all his children had a good education, received what they needed and he prided himself on giving them what he wasn't fortunate to have as a child. Our father enjoyed talking on the phone to family, friends and his grandchildren, who referred to him as "Big Daddy." Winston looked forward to Catfish Tuesdays at “Horizons” to eat and socialize with others. Winston leaves with heavy hearts, six children; Mia "Shon" (Jose’) Negron, Vida Butler (Edgar), Shaneditha "Sha" Butler, Alliecia "Allie" Butler, Lavoris (Charlene) Griffin and Kameron Ryan; seven grandchildren, Winston, Mia, Chariya, A'Niyah, Nazariah, Kaden, Kelsi, Starr and Lavoris; three loving sisters: Sadie Maiden, Velma Gaddis and Vida Rouse, one God-son, Jalen Heath, a host of dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who include, Marcellous Barney, Buford Gaiter, JB Riggins and longtime neighbor and dear friend, Saundra Lynn . Our father was welcomed home with open arms by his parents; brothers: James, Staton, Ivory, and Travis Butler; his sisters: Elnora Kroger, Ileane Ager, Lois Fletcher, Aretta McIntosh, and Madolyn Harvey, and his very dear friends; Wilford Lynn and William (Buddy) Oates. Family hour will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 725 North 24th Street with the funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Robert Corley will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
